THOMAS COUNTY ELECTION
RESULTS
A heavy turnout of Thomas County voters during the General Election Tuesday,
November 7, resulted in the election of the first two women to the Thomas
County Board of Commissioners. One of the women, Democrat Mary Jo Beverly,
defeated the incumbent commissioner in District 6, Republican Jim Miller, 54%
to 46%. The other woman, Republican Elaine Mays, defeated former commissioner
and Democrat Joe Fallin for the District 8 seat being vacated by retiring
commission chairman Tim Sherrod. Mays had 65% to Fallin’s 35%. The incumbent
State House Representative for District 180, Republican John Bulloch, defeated
Democratic challenger Fred Dorminy, with 5688 votes (52%) for Bulloch to 5190
votes (48%) for Dorminy. Incumbent Coroner Sam Brown, a Democrat, defeated
Republican challenger Raymond Cook, 66% to 34%. In the contest for the US
Congress Second District post, Thomas County gave a majority of its vote to the
Republican challenger, Dylan Glenn, 55%, over the incumbent Democratic
Congressman Sanford Bishop, 45%, however Bishop won the district to return to
Congress. In the presidential election, the county voted for the George Bush
and Dick Cheney Republican ticket as did the state. The county also gave Zell
Miller a majority of the vote for US Senate as did the rest of the state. For
Public Service Commissioners, the county voted along with the rest of the state
for Democrat David Burgess and Republican Stan Wise.
