RAIN REPORTED
There was a scattering of rain Wednesday night and early Thursday morning in Thomas County, but it is gone now and not likely to come back through the weekend. Radar indications from the NWS in Tallahassee say most of the showers were in central Thomas County with between a tenth and quarter of an inch. A cold front is due to pass through for the rest of the week and bring dry air.
WILDFIRE UPDATE
Firefighters say they continue to make progress against a wildfire that has burned 390 square miles across Georgia and Florida near the state line. Florida Division of Forestry spokesman Jim Harrell says calm air yesterday allowed firefighters to strengthen containment lines, but the weather is expected to bring strong winds and high temperatures. The official in charge of fighting the blaze in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge says the only hope of putting out the fire is heavy rain, such as a tropical depression dumping nine or ten inches of rain on the swamp. A long-term fire analyst with the US Forest Service said that given the extended forecast, the area probably will not get a drenching until hurricane season peaks, sometime between August and November. The worst wildfires in Georgia since the 1950s have burned more than 600 square miles of dried-out forest and swampland in drought-hit southeastern Georgia and northern Florida.
