FIRE CALLS
Thomasville Fire-Rescue went to Balfour Lumber Company on West Clay Street Sunday May 13 about 12:30AM when a sawdust storage building fire rekindled. Lumber company staff had been dealing with the fire since May 10, but called fire units Sunday for help in putting the fire out.
--Fire units went to 1838 County Line Road Friday, May 11, about 7:45AM on complaints of a trash fire in the backyard of a residence there. The resident said they had always burned trash without a permit, but fire officials told the resident that a permit was always needed and none were being issued because of the dangerous conditions. Fire units put the fire out.
--An electrical problem in an air-conditioner at MacIntyre Park Middle School caused smoke in a classroom Friday, May 11, about 8AM. Fire units secured the scene.
--A fire alarm was accidentally set off at Thomas County Central High School Friday about 11:35AM. One fire engine was sent to investigate.
--About 1PM Friday a smoke detector was damaged and activated during cleaning at a residence at 110 Lynn Marie Drive. Fire units were called and secured the scene.

Strong easterly winds behind a cold front will send smoke from fires in northeast Florida and south central Georgia across the region today. Visibilities will be reduced below 3 miles at times with localized areas, generally east of a Thomasville to Tallahassee line, seeing reductions to one mile. The smoke will continue to move over the region through at least Tuesday. On Wednesday winds will come out of the south and should provide a brief respite from the smoke. A cold front will move through the region on Thursday bringing a chance for showers and thunderstorms. Dry weather will return for the weekend.
--Dense smoke from wildfires still covered the area while hundreds of Florida residents wait to return to their threatened homes. The wildfire has burned more than 233,700 acres, about 365 square miles, since it was started by lightning a week ago. Authorities closed approximately 75 miles of I-75 and I-10 Saturday but were able to open the roads for a couple of hours Sunday morning. However, they were later forced to close again 35 miles of I-75 from the Florida-Georgia state line to Lake City, Florida, as well as a 40 miles of I-10 in Florida, from Live Oak to Sanderson.
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TO APPEAR HERE
The Thomas County Republican Party will hear a third-tier candidate for President from the Republican Party during their monthly meeting Tuesday, May 15. Dr. Hugh Cort, a physician in the practice of psychiatric medicine, lives in Mountain Brook, Alabama, and will be at the local Republican Party monthly luncheon to be held this coming Tuesday, 12:00 noon at the Plaza Restaurant.
--On his campaign web site, Cort says he announced his candidacy for the 2008 Republican Presidential nomination on January 21, 2005. He says, "I am an internationally recognized counter-terrorism expert. I travel the country speaking about terrorism and how we must stop it. National security is the number one issue facing this country and I am the one candidate with the expertise to ensure the safety of you and your family." He says, "I'm a Republican because I believe in hard work, self-reliance, less government, the preservation of our Judeo-Christian values, and the free enterprise system that has made America the envy of the world." He also says he strongly supports a pro-life amendment to the U.S. Constitution banning abortion and a pro-marriage amendment stating that marriage is between a man and a woman only. He is against raising taxes and for reducing government spending. He is pro-business and is in favor of tort reform to reduce frivolous lawsuits.
